A Quilt of Comfort

Today in America, we remember the victims and rescue workers who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The quilt squares above are part of The 9/11 Memorial Quilt, created to honor them. The entire project was a grass roots operation, started by two Long Beach, California residents, Corey Gammel and Peter Marquez, who wanted to do something to help in the aftermath of the attacks. The result is a 142 panel quilt, made up of blocks dedicated to individuals—beautiful, personal tributes to the men, women, and children who were lost that day. The quilt blocks have been created by friends, family, and even complete strangers from around the globe and the final product is truly inspiring.

I gathered a few of my favorites here for you, but if you'd like more inspiration, browse the entire gallery. It's time well spent.

Isn't it amazing the good that can bloom out of something terrible? It never ceases to amaze me.
